GENERAL INFORMATION OF PUNO
Puno is without a doubt one of the most attractive destinations of the Peru and one of the most interesting on the continent: few cities have the privilege of being located on the shores of a natural wonder like Lake Titicaca, the highest navigable lake in the world at more than 3800 masl.
Located in the Collao plateau in the territory of the collas and tiahuanacos, Puno, is the most important Lake port of the Peru. Its strategic location between the cities of Cusco and peace, make Puno a step forced for tourists who travel between Peru and Bolivia. Puno city is capital of the Department of the same name.
The Department of Puno near what today is Bolivia, territory of the Tiahuanaco culture were, then he had the presence of the Inca Empire, as evidence, is the Temple of the phalluses, in Chucuito. Here you will find the famous islands floating Uros, an amazing Archipelago of islands of totora, inhabited by the Uros, descendants of one of the oldest cultures of the continent. Also it is advisable to visit the island of Taquile and enjoy of an authentic experiential tourism.
Within walking distance there is the Amantani Island, which boasts natural vantage points from where you can see Lake Titicaca to the fullest. Suasi, in the community of Cambria, on the shores of Lake Titicaca, is a unique and private island, a resting place where you can enjoy the diversity of flora and fauna. It is also advisable to know the archipelago of Anapia.
Puno invites you to visit the chullpas of Sillustani, also the forest of Tinajani, which impresses with its large rock formations. Likewise, in Pucara made the famous "pucara Toritos".
To reach Puno from Lima, it can be reached by road, passing through Arequipa and Juliaca. The journey takes about 18 hours. You can also choose to take a flight to Juliaca which only 1 h with 45 min from Lima, or 25 mins if it starts from Arequipa. You can wound by train to Puno, from the city of Cusco in 10 hours; in this case, the tour is 384 km.
The city of Puno
The Spanish Foundation of Puno city dates back to 1668. Puno is a city rich in local mestizo art expressions: colonial balconies, arches of hewn stone, baroque churches and museums with great pieces of ceramic and textile art. However, perhaps the biggest attractions of the place are scarce ten blocks from the Plaza de Armas, in the waters of Lake Titicaca: a vast surface of 8.560 km2 that locals ply skillfully in boats made of reeds, a kind of Bulrush that grows on the banks of the Lake (or in boats,) when it comes to the visitor.
Puno is a tourist destination thanks to its proximity to Lake Titicaca and the Chullpas of Sillustani. The city itself is not very interesting and looks to some extent somewhat poor. Most of the houses are made of adobe and covered with metal roofs, however, we can find some beautiful buildings such as the Cathedral, the Church of San Juan, the Deustua arch and the balcony of the Conde de Lemos.
The Jirón Lima is a free car, with many restaurants and pubs. This street is the center of nightlife and it is frequented by many tourists and locals in search of distraction. Sentences with live music create a pleasant atmosphere. This street leads to the main square of Puno, where you can appreciate its beautiful Cathedral built in 1747 by Simon de Asto. On the Avenue Tower is located the train station as well as a fruit and vegetable market.
